The Foro Italico once known as the Foro Mussolini is located in the Prati della Farnesina. It was started under the Fascist regime.
This sporting campus was extensively decorated with indoor and outdoor mosaics between 1934 and 1937. The School Irene of Spilimbergo, in the North-East Italian region of Friuli, was charged with the largest extension of the decorative work. Its own technique rivoltatura, proved to be far cheaper than the traditional one and was apt to achieve good results, comparable to the ones constructed using the direct method. Gino Severini, Angelo Canevari, Giulio Rosso and Achille Capizzano provided the preparatory drawings for the mosaic compositions, and masters and students from Spilimbergo elaborated a wide range of technical devices.
As you can see, these mosaics are HUGE. Check out the perspective with the huge legs and lower bodies. A real suggestion of power in the detailed musculature of the thighs.
There is also a real homoerotic feel to these mosaics.
We have a family story about Mussolini. The family is Swiss and Mussolini used to holiday in the area. GrandMaman considered him to be absolutely charming and a wonderful dancer.
I wonder what she would think of these mosaics?!
