Back in November I went to the St Mary’s Star of the Sea Cathedral in Darwin city and found they had a beautiful series of mosaics depicting the stations of the cross. I never got to finish photographing them because people came in to prepare for a wedding. So I popped in there today. I also found the plaque that gives some information about these.
The mosaics were designed by a Miss Lola McCausland of Brisbane. The actual mosaics themselves are made of Venetian glass and created at Spilimbergo in Italy which is where the famous Mosaic School of Friuli can be found.
Sorry about the quality of this one. I’ll go back and retake it later. Should have checked my photos.
The features worth looking out for are in the eighth station where the woman being comforted is an Aboriginal girl and the fellow who looked familiar to me but whom I couldn’t identify in the fourteenth is Fr W M Henschke.
